The most impressive aspect of Roger Federer's ascendancy to the top of the tennis world is the way he carries himself as a champion. It's quite unusual. He just lets his racquet do the talking. Roger has so much natural talent, they would just disrupt it if they muddled his mind. He exudes energy, and you just know he enjoys the camaraderie of all his competitors. Tennis had lost that positive vibe over the years. His game is so spectacular and graceful—I can't tell you how many times I've asked friends, "Did you see Roger's shot last week, the crosscourt winner he hit a zillion miles per hour?" He has this amazing knack for raising his game just a notch more than an opponent. He never gets rattled if he's down. You can only marvel.

Every time I speak to Roger, I sense no ego on his part. He asks me questions about how I prepared for big matches—Roger has a clear appreciation for the history of tennis. (Plus, these days, I should be the one peppering him with questions. He's the big star!) When you're talking to Roger, he makes you feel important—whether you're a fan, an opposing player or an old geezer like me. People often ask me if Roger, 25, is the greatest player of all time. Let's wait until the end of his career before making the "best ever" judgment. He should definitely be in every conversation. One thing is for sure: he's the best player of his time and one of the most admirable champions on the planet. That's certainly something worth crowing over. The beauty is, Roger Federer won't.

Nie bez powodu poważne pisma zamieszczają artykuły pod dość wymownym tytułem „Czy Federer to człowiek?”, a amerykański pisarz David Foster Wallace napisał książkę: “Roger Federer jako religijne doświadczenie: jak gracja, szybkość, siła, precyzja i zdumiewająca zdolność podkręcania piłki przez jednego gracza zmieniają oblicze męskiego tenisa”. Nie po to wymyślał ten przydługi tytuł, żeby jakiś Hewitt opowiadał banały o "zwykłym człowieku”.

Dlatego dziś bukmacherzy nie przyjmują zakładów, czy Roger Federer wygra rozpoczynający się właśnie Wimbledon. Za banalne. Obstawiać można, czy przez cały turniej odda choć jednego seta. Przecież w tym roku w Australian Open nie przegrał żadnego, a z kortów w Londynie schodził niepokonany w 2003, 2004, 2005 i 2006 roku. Wcale nie jest powiedziane, że ktoś w tej dekadzie przerwie tę serię.

Dziś na świecie jest tylko jeden człowiek, który Federera może pokonać - Hiszpan Rafael Nadal. Ale tylko na nawierzchni ziemnej. "Dlatego wiem, że dopóki Rafa gra w tenisa, nigdy nie wygram na Roland Garros" - mówi skromnie Szwajcar. "Ale wiecie co? Jakoś mogę z tym żyć" - śmieje się od ucha do ucha.

Australian Open - Federer set for Kooyong

World number one Roger Federer will prepare for the defence of his Australian Open title at the Kooyong Classic, tournament organisers have announced.

Federer, who won at Kooyong in 2005 and was the beaten finalist last year, will be playing at the eight man round-robin tournament for the fifth time before heading to Melbourne Park to bid for his fourth Australian Open title.
Two time defending champion Andy Roddick has also announced his participation in the event as have Russia's Marat Safin and 2007 Australian Open finalist Fernando Gonzalez.
Britain's Andy Murray, German Tommy Haas and Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia are also set to compete with the eighth place still open.

Federer confirms season's top tennis ranking through second Basel title.

BASLE, Switzerland (AFP) - Roger Federer added another honour to his vast collection as a 6-3, 6-4 title victory over Jarkko Nieminen at the Swiss Indoors assured the hometown boy of a fourth year ending as world number one on Sunday.

"It's great to win at home again," said the 12-time Grand Slam champion, who also lifted the title a year ago at the venue where he got his start as a ballboy.

"I've now got the number one for another year. The crowd really helped me," he said of 9,200 at the St Jakobshalle. "Especially at 4-all in the second when I was able to break Jarkko."

Federer joins another pantheon of greats how have earned four year-end top spots in the past: Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras.

The superlative Swiss claimed his ATP-leading seventh trophy of the season in 61 minutes and is now due to play the Paris Masters next week for the first time since 2003.

The world-beater then heads the field for the season-wrapup Masters Cup in Shanghai starting in a fortnight.

ATP World No. 1 Roger Federer is a scary site with a tennis racquet in his hand. But there's no telling how much damage he could do with a sword.

Thankfully an armor-clad Federer was only playing to the camera when he unsheathed a sword recently. Dressed as King Arthur from "The Sword in the Stone" for Disney's "Year of a Million Dreams" promotion, Federer was photographed by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz.

The finished photo, entitled "Where You're Always King of the Court," shows Federer, red cape flowing, beside a roiling sea.

"I always think it's cute when little kids dress up as Robin Hood or Tarzan," Federer said. "So when they approached me to do King Arthur I thought the idea was absolutely great. Now that you're older you don't get dressed up for a birthday party any more, so to be in armor was a special thing.

"I did feel strong on that rock. Everybody is looking at me. I'm higher than everybody. I got the sword, I got the armor and I got the longer hair going. It was a lot of fun."
