Roddick konczy współprace z Connorsem !

Po wygranej w meczu z Rafaelem Nadalem Andy Roddick oznajmił że kończy przygodę trenerską z Jimbo Connorsem. Dokładne powody nie są teraz znane. :

After his biggest victory in more than four years Thursday, Andy Roddick surprised the tennis world by announcing that he had ended his partnership with coach Jimmy Connors. Roddick fired 17 aces to upset second seed Rafael Nadal 7-6(5), 6-2 to reach the Dubai semifinals. It was the American's first victory over a player ranked No. 2 or higher in more than four years.

But the bigger news was that the former World No. 1 had split with Connors one week earlier. Connors had traveled to just one tournament with Roddick in 2008 - the Australian Open.

"Jimmy resigned," Roddick said in his post-match media conference. "Our team is just me, (brother) John and (fitness trainer) Doug (Spreen). [It happened] probably about a week ago. I still have the utmost respect for Jimmy and I thank him for his time.

"I think it was tough for him to do it part time, maybe not getting exactly the results we wanted... It was amicable. We're friends. I have so much respect for him as a person. I'm sad but thankful for what he was able to give to me and that he could take time out of his retirement and spend it with me."

Asked what improvements and changes Connors had made to his game, Roddick said: "Playing up in the court. I had to adjust my game. He's helped my backhand a ton. It's a different shot than when we got together. And the fighting spirit. When we got together I was as close to down and out as I've been. I spent the week after Wimbledon as closed to depressed as I've been, as far as my career goes. I really credit him for that spark and getting me back into the Top 5 and a Slam final."

Roddick began working with Connors in July 2006 in Indianapolis. At that moment he had fallen outside the Top 10 (he was No. 11) for the first time since October 2002. But he found immediate success with Connors, going 18-2 through the summer hard court season and reaching the US Open final.

Roddick's record under Connors was 23-8 in 2006, 54-16 in 2007 and 8-1 in 2008 (through San Jose, where he won his 24th ATP title). His combined record under his time with Connors was 85-25 and he reached as high as No. 3 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings. He won four titles from seven finals during the partnership.

Roddick added: "I was keeping him away from the golf course and he likes to walk his dog every morning. But I was happy to have spent some time with a legend."

Andy Roddick long has said his four goals when he started his pro career were to reach No. 1 in the world, win the U.S. Open, win the Davis Cup and win Wimbledon.

Roddick has achieved the first three of these four goals (and become engaged to a supermodel, to boot). On Friday, before the United States’ Davis Cup quarterfinal against France at Joel Coliseum, Roddick and the rest of the U.S. team received their rings for winning the tournament in 2007.Davis Cup victories used to be common for the U.S. Hanging from the arena’s rafters, where one might expect to see a giant jersey honoring Tim Duncan during Demon Deacons basketball season, were banners commemorating each of the United States’ titles in the competition. However, last year’s victory was the first for the U.S. since 1995.

Roddick deserves much of the credit for the victory. He was undefeated in Davis Cup matches in 2007, partly because of the experience he has gained from participating in the competition since 2001.

“I’ve become a good Davis Cup player,” he said following his 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 victory over Michael Llodra that gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five match tie. “At the beginning of my career, I don’t think I played my best tennis at the Davis Cup. It’s a different kind of pressure and a different kind of match.”

Of course, American fans — perhaps spoiled by the ’90s, a golden era for U.S. tennis thanks to the likes of Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Jim Courirer — would like to see Roddick win more of the regular, non-team matches and cross career goal No. 4 off the list by winning Wimbledon (or any other Grand Slam, for that matter).

Andy battled into the semifinals in Rome for the first time since 2002 with a fine 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4) victory over accomplished clay court player Tommy Robredo on Friday at the Foro Italico.

Having already disposed of Mardy Fish and local hope Simone Bolelli in the earlier rounds, Andy produced another committed and professional performance to knock off No. 16 ranked Robredo.

One element of Andy’s game that shone through today, to join his backhand from earlier performances, was his serve and volley play, which came to the fore when he most needed it and proved to be the difference on the big points.

Andy began the match eager to make an early impression and nearly did so as he was presented with three break points in Robredo’s opening service game, but a good recovery from Robredo ensured he held on.

Andy’s persistence paid off as he got his break in the fourth game with help from some Robredo errors to lead 3-1. The Spaniard had a chance to hit back immediately at 0-40 on Andy’s serve, but Andy changed it up by charging the net on all three occasions and his bravery was rewarded as he held his game to lead 4-1.

There were to be no more incidents on Andy’s serve as he went on to close out the set in convincing fashion, two big serves at 30-0 sealing it 6-3 after 32 minutes.

Both players were forced to save break points early in the second set and Andy’s serve was called into action to fend one off at 4-3 before the crunch game came at 4-5 with Andy serving. At 15-30 a superb forehand pass from Robredo set him up with two set points at 15-40, and took it on the first as a miscued backhand slice, accompanied by a cry of anguish from Andy, found its way into the bottom of the net to level up the match at one set all.

Andy was back in front early in the second set, breaking in the third game as Robredo fired a forehand wide.

Andy has chances to gain a double break in Robredo’s following service game, but some big time play from the Spaniard keept Andy at bay, and he was made to rue his missed chances as Robredo found some inspirational shots to bring up a break point at 30-40 and a double fault from Andy, his fifth of the match, got Robredo back on level terms.

With Robredo looking to capitalize on his momentum, Andy did well to take the third set into a tie-break where his serve proved to be a lethal weapon. In the blink of an eye he was 3-0 up with two more aces under his belt and he went on to close out the tie-break and the match with a power smash at 6-4 in the breaker.

In the semifinals Andy will face Stanislas Wawrinka, who defeated James Blake in the day’s earlier quarterfinal.

Stay tuned to andyroddick.com for all the latest from Rome.

Go, Andy!

Andy is representing Team USA at the ARAG World Team Cup next week in a final lead up to the French Open at Roland Garros.

Led by Coach John Roddick, Andy, James Blake, Bob and Mike Bryan and Wayne Odesnik will represent Team USA in its bid to win the title for the first time since 1993.

The Americans have been drawn in the Red Group, alongside Argentine, the Czech Republic and Sweden. The tournament is played out in a round robin format, with the best team in the Red Group go on to face the best team from the Blue Group, which includes Spain, Russia, Germany and Italy.

The Round Robin format gurantees each team three matches, an added bonus going into the second Grand Slam of the year.

Andy has played in the World Team Cup twice before in 2002 and 2006. Like he said in his most recent Facebook entry, he will not be ready for Sunday’s opening match against the Czech Republic. Instead, James Blake and Wayne Odesnik will play the singles matches against Tomas Berdych and Ivo Minar respectively, with the doubles to be played on Monday.

Stay tuned to andyroddick.com for all the latest from Dusseldorf.

Go Team USA!

French Open - Roddick forced out of Roland Garros

World number six Andy Roddick has pulled out of next week's French Open due to a problem with his back, his brother John Roddick has confirmed at the World Team Cup in Duesseldorf.

The American former world number one sustained the injury at this month's Rome Masters and had to pull out of his semi-final match against Stanislas Wawrinka trailing 3-0 in the first set.

"Andy recently played as well as never before on clay," his brother, who is the U.S. team captain at the World Team Cup, said in a statement released by Duesseldorf organisers.

"But last Friday his back problems resurfaced," he said.

"After an examination by a specialist in New York he was forced to withdraw. Andy now has to rest for 10 to 12 days and will neither be able to play the French Open."

The big-serving 2003 U.S. Open champion has never made it past the third round at Roland Garros and fell in the first round the past two years.

Bobby Reynolds has been drafted in to replace Roddick at the World Team Cup, organisers said.

Roddick Ready for Rogers Cup

“We are all really excited to have Andy back here (at the Rogers Cup),” noted Tournament Director Karl Hale when he spoke with AR.com. “As the 2003 champion and a two-time finalist, Andy has a lot of fan base here.” Our number one American is seeded sixth and will return for his seventh appearance at this Masters Series Event to take on the opposition at Toronto’s Rexall Centre from July 19-27.

This Toronto/Montreal based event, which flip-flops locations every year, is the third oldest tennis tournament having been created in 1881 after Wimbledon and the US Open were established. Since then, there have been upgrades and enhancements, and in 2004, Toronto built the Rexall Centre which boasts a 12,500 seat Centre Court and also has a Grandstand stadium for the top matches. Though the fans couldn’t experience the Rexall Centre last year, Montreal was happy to welcome 182,252 fans through its gates, setting the new world record for high attendance at a week-long tournament. In addition to a different location this year, it also holds a new “time slot” on the Greatest Road Trip in Sports. Last year, the Rogers Cup was the second week in August, which Andy participated in after claiming his fifth Legg Mason title, but this year it is in mid-July.

“Andy has a very well-known serve, and the fans love to see it live,” Hale commented. Even though this is the second stop as part of the Olympus US Open Series, it will be Andy’s first go on the North American Decoturf hardcourts where he will be firing that serve through a tough draw. As the top 8 seeds got a first round bye, Andy’s second round match will be against the winner of the Tipsarovic (SER)/Mahut (FRA) match. Mahut was the 2007 Queen’s Club finalist who gave the Championships the greatest final it has ever seen with Andy prevailing at the very end.

Next, Andy could face Spain’s Tommy Robredo (12), followed by a quarterfinal showdown against Federer. Andy has two advantages here; he won their last encounter a few months ago and also claimed his first “W” over Fed at this very event back in 2003 on his way to the title. The semifinals could have compatriot James Blake (7) or Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko (4) standing across the net from Andy, then with either Nadal or defending champ Novak Djokovic as his finals opponent.

“Andy has a unique personality,” Hale said, “and fans are attracted to his on-court demeanor because he shows his emotions.” These characteristics will be revealed yet again as Andy hopes to reach and surpass last year’s quarterfinal showing against eventual champion Novak Djokovic, 7-6, 6-4.

“As a past champion here, Andy is well recognized and we are all looking for him to regain the title,” as are we.

Stay tuned to AR.com for everything Andy from Toronto. Go Andy!

Elton John just hosted his 16th annual Advanta World Team Tennis Smash Hits event this past weekend. The money raised will be used to help those with AIDS in the South.

Joining Elton to help out in this great event were several star players and celebs, including Andy Roddick.

Up for auction to raise money for the benefit was an hour session of private tennis tutoring with Roddick. And, in an attempt to get a higher bid, the recently engaged Andy said he’d take off his shirt during the session.

That got the bid up to $11,000! Then, he said he’d do the lesson FULLY nude. That got him a final $15,000 from one very luck female fan.

Coraz głośniej mówi się o tym, że Rod będzie miał nowego trenera:

Cytat:
A-Rod's ankle

It's been that kind of season for Roddick.

He loses early at the Australian Open, rebounds by knocking off Nadal, Djokovic and Federer in the spring, then suffers a shoulder injury that keeps him out of the French Open and hampers his performance at Wimbledon, where he was greeted by a second-round exit.

He had shoddy preparation for the U.S. Open, affected by a neck malaise and cutting coaching ties with brother John. Then came Tuesday's setback to his right ankle.

Roddick realistically needed to down Federer and Simon to emerge from his group, an uphill task, after falling to Murray on Monday.

"The risk-reward wasn't there," he said. "You're risking further injury where it might cut into preparation for next year."

Reports in England, meanwhile, suggest Paul Annacone, the former coach of Pete Sampras and Tim Henman, could be hooking up with Roddick.

[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]

Cytat:
This is Roddick’s sixth consecutive Masters, a statistic underlining his consistency since he broke his grand-slam title duck at the 2003 US Open, but he has been unable to repeat the experience. In an attempt to remedy that, the 26-year-old Nebraskan is preparing to name his new coach and the smart American money is on Paul Annacone, the head coach of men’s tennis at the LTA. If the offer is made, it would be tempting to Tim Henman’s former coach.

Q. Are you planning on making any sort of coaching appointment this winter?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, we've been talking about if for a little bit. There's a short list. I didn't want to start going through the process of talking to people either over the phone or in person until my season was finished. That's something that I'd definitely like to get taken care of in the next couple weeks.

Q. Is Paul Annacone on your list?
ANDY RODDICK: No, I'm not going comment on who's on the list and who's not at this point. It's a short list, and it's a list I'm comfortable with. I'm also not really looking to pursue people who already have jobs.

No niby tak, ale to ostatnie zdanie wypowiedziane przez Roda jest jakby właśnie zaprzeczeniem, że chodzi o Annacone, bo on już współpracuje Henmanem.

No ale zobaczymy ja trzymam kciuki, żeby to doszło do skutku.
