US Open Draw Released

n Thursday, the draw was made for the US Open, which starts on Monday at Flushing Meadows, New York.

Seeded No. 8, Andy finds himself at the top of the third quarter of the draw and will face tricky Frenchman Fabrice Santoro in the opening round.

The draw doesn’t improve for Andy as he faces a potential match-up with either promising Latvian teenager Ernests Gulbis or experienced Swede Thomas Johansson should he progress to the second round.

Seeded to meet Andy in the third round is No. 31 Andreas Seppi and a possible fourth round clash with No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez is on the cards.

Also in the same quarter as Andy are No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic, compatriot Robby Ginepri, Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, former US Open champion Marat Safin and No. 15 seed Tommy Robredo.

Looking further ahead, the recently usurped World No. 1 and defending champion Roger Federer is seeded second and placed at the bottom of the fourth quarter of the draw. Top seeds in that part of the draw include No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko, No. 12 Richard Gasquet and No. 13 Fernando Verdasco.

Roddick Sails By Santoro

Welcome back to the Jungle, Andy, we’ve missed you. The Andy we all know and love was back tonight, but better with a well-rounded game of changing up shots, serves, and transitions. “If you let (Santoro) in, then you have a tough match. I wanted to try and bully the ball around and try and get on top of him early. I felt I did that,” Andy noted after the match, and that’s just what he did when he dismissed France’s Fabrice Santoro in 6-2 triplets in the first round at Flushing Meadows.

With a packed house of 23,000+ in attendance, both red, white, and blue patriotic players took to center stage – Arthur Ashe Stadium- for a 9:30pm start. Andy bullied the ball tonight right off Santoro’s racquet and broke his opening service game. At 1-0, Andy was serving for the game and a 147 ace down the T guaranteed its hold to the server. The Frenchman got on board the game after at 2-1. From baseline-to-baseline rallies to tricky volleys, both players added magic to tonight’s match, though Andy’s firepower- especially his cross-court passing shots- was too much to handle. Break point #2 came around and our man in head-to-toe black Lacoste clinched it. At 4-1, with the lead sealed for the set, both players held their games to end the 26 minute set at 6-2.

Warmed up and up a set, Andy pulled a few yellow bullets out of his black cap, turned them into feathers, and dropped them right onto Santoro’s side, breaking the Frenchman’s opening service game yet again. At 4-2, the second set started looking like the first as Andy broke the 35-year-old veteran for the fourth time after he sent a rally long. The number one American went on to hold, take the set 6-2, and lead two sets to love.

Deja vu three-fold began as Andy sent soaring returns back off Santoro’s serves, and Andy’s third opening opportunity to break came, this time with double break points, and landed right into his back pocket with the other two. Now, stop- rewind to first set- repeat, and that’s how Andy closed out the third set games, took the final set, and the match. Piling 15 aces, 41 winners to 14 unforced errors, and a 147 ace up in 87 minutes of play earned Andy his 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 victory over one of tennis’ true entertainers.

Up next, Andy takes on Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, ranked No. 40 in the world, in Round 2 at the 2008 US Open. Stay tuned to AR.com for a look ahead at this match and everything Andy in NYC. Go Andy!

Andy To Grapple With Gulbis In Round Two

After outsmarting Fabrice Santoro in the first round, Andy faces quite a different challenge when he takes on Latvian teenager Ernests Gulbis in round two.

As well as sharing a birthday with Andy – Gulbis will turn 20 tomorrow – the Jurmala resident also has a big-hitting game that is touted to become a big force in the men’s game in years to come. He is a former student of Niki Pilic and trained at Pilic’s Tennis Academy in Munich until he was 18.

The right-hander, who considers his serve (like Andy) and backhand drop shot to be his best shots, is no stranger to success. His mother is a drama theatre actress, his father a former basketball player, and his grandfather was a starter on the former Soviet Union national basketball team that won the European Championships. The multi-talented Gulbis can speak four languages and also enjoys playing soccer, basketball and hockey.

Check out Gulbis’ stats courtesy of the ATP site:

Birthdate: 30-Aug-88
Birthplace: Riga, Latvia
Residence: Jurmala, Latvia
Height: 6’3’’ (190 cm)
Weight: 169 lbs (76 kg)
Plays: Right-handed
Turned Pro: 2004
Current ATP Ranking – Singles: 40
Career High ATP Ranking – Singles: 38 (4-Aug-08)
Current ATP Race – Singles: 50

As his stats attest, Gulbis has had a strong year, recently hitting a career-high ATP ranking of No. 38 after reaching the quarterfinals at Cincinnati and Roland Garros. Gulbis made a quarterfinal exit at the US Open last year and knocked out Thomas Johansson in the first round this week.

Andy is certainly aware of the threat Gulbis poses: “It’s a different type of match (from the first round). Gulbis serves a little bit bigger, so it’s going to be a couple of points. He is a little streaky; comes up with big shots in a row. You have to just kind of be ready for that moment where maybe he takes a break mentally.”

The match will once again be played under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium, starting second from a 7:00pm start (EST).

Go, Andy!

Roddick Rebounds to Reach Round 3

The two birthday boys battled past midnight for the third round golden ticket at the 2008 US Open, but our american firepower overpowered the young latvian, Ernest Gulbis, in a fierce four sets, 3-6, 7~5, 6~2, 7~5.

Andy knew it was going to be a tough match tonight, stating to the press that Gulbis is “streaky” and that he’ll have to wait until Gulbis takes mental break to pounce on him, and that is just what Andy did.

Gulbis came out swinging and broke Andy’s first service game. Gulbis had killer offensive drop shots and serves and great defensive reflexes both at the net and the baseline, which allowed him to hold and take the first set to Andy’s utter dismay, and his smashed Babolat Pure Drive’s too, 3-6.

Frazzled and waiting for the chance to attack, Andy fought the entire second set, but couldn’t convert a break point until it was absolutely necessary- on set point at 6-5. Andy capitalized and celebrated with both arms in the air to the crowd to even the score and get back in the match,7-5.

“The clock struck twelve and I started playing like a 26-year-old,” Andy noted in his on-court commentary post-match. As he continued a year older and an hour wiser, he kept up the momentum intimidating the up-and-comer and broke his serve two times in third set to pull away at 6-2, up 2 sets to 1.

The fourth set played out like the second, going all of the way to the last points. Though Andy faced a break point, he earned one back as not only a break or set point, but a match point at 6-5. Though Gulbis came up with another stellar cross-court forehand, it was that same shot that he pushed through a little too hard with Advantage Roddick that sealed the deal for the number one American.

Stay tuned AR.com for Seppi up next. Go Andy!

Andy Into US OPEN 4th Round

Under the sun in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Andy overpowered Seppi 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (4) to advance to the sweet sixteen at the US Open. “I was able to fight through and that is the most important thing,” Andy said in the on court interview. “I’m excited, I love this crowd and I can’t wait for the fourth round!”

Andy sailed through the first set, breaking Seppi at 1-0 and again at 5-2 to seal the first set 6-2. Andy looked confident in his first day match of the Open, only dropping 5 points in the opening set on his serve and hitting over 80% of his that dominant weapon.

In the second set Andy proved his game is more than a blistering serve and demonstrated some crafty net play. At 2-1, the unusual happened when the crowd cheered as a cloud briefly covered the intense sun. Seppi proved far more comfortable in the second set but Andy was looking for a quick day at the office and pushed the Italian to deuce points early on. At 3-3 Andy was on a roll with 15 straight service points in the set, but Seppi found his footing and continued to rally as the two headed to 4-4.

The ninth game saw the first time Seppi challenged Andy on serve but at deuce, the American fired a 140mph serve followed by another massive serve for 5-4. As the two continued to battle Andy fired his 8th ad 9th aces to take a 6-5 lead. Two net cords in Andy’s favor helped give him set point, but Andy missed a backhand to send the game back to deuce. Again, Andy aggressively rushed the net to earn another set point and this time he prevailed after a long baseline rally for a two set lead 6-2, 7-5.

Andy kicked off the third set with a decisive hold 1-0. Throughout the match Andy successfully mixed up the placement and pace of his serve, always keeping Seppi guessing. Despite loosing a few challenges and a small disagreement with the umpire on the time allowed to challenge a call, Andy surged to 2-1. The Italian saw his first break points of the match and converted the second for a 3-2 lead. Andy showed some frustration late in the third when he had a glimpse to break back but miss-hit a shot at 30 all. As the shade started to crawl over the Stadium nearing five o’clock, Andy showed his Champion form earning two break points to level the set. Seppi saved the first by coming to the net but with an audible “yes” Andy clinched the second as Seppi fired a forehand long. Unwilling to give the Italian another opportunity Andy aced his way to 6-5. Seppi countered with a hold at love to send the match to a third set tie-break.

Andy gave up the first point with an unfortunate double fault. At 2-0 Seppi also gave up a double fault to trade back the mini-break. The momentum shifted quickly as Andy hung tough for a 4-2 lead. Andy saw his first match point at 6-4 on Seppi’s serve. He sliced a backhand down the line and the Italian’s forehand landed deep in the net to place Andy in the Round of Sixteen.

Next up, Andy faces the winner of Nieminen and Gonzalez.

Andy To Face Gonzalez For Quarters Spot

For a place in his seventh US Open quarterfinal, Andy will face Chilean No. 11 seed Fernando Gonzalez on Tuesday night at Flushing Meadows.

The 28-year-old Gonzalez has been enjoying a good run of form of late, winning the Beijing Olympic Games silver medal prior to beginning his US Open campaign. The La Reina resident also captured two titles at Vina del Mar and Munich earlier in the season.

Gonzalez, who is coached by Larry Stefanki, is through to the US Open quarterfinals for the second time after falling to Sjeng Schalken in five sets in 2002. He had fallen first round on his past two attempts.

Find out more about Gonzalez from his ATP stats below:

Birthdate: 29-Jul-80
Birthplace: Santiago, Chile
Residence: La Reina, Chile
Height: 6’0’’ (182 cm)
Weight: 180 lbs (81 kg)
Plays: Right-handed
Turned Pro: 1999
Coach: Larry Stefanki

Current ATP Ranking – Singles: 11
Career High ATP Ranking – Singles: 5 (29-Jan-07)
Current ATP Race – Singles: 12

Andy has played Gonzalez on 10 previous occasions and leads the head-to-head series 7-3; Andy also leads 4-3 on hard courts. They last met at the 2007 Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, where Andy won in straight sets.

Looking ahead, Andy commented: “I’ve played Gonzo a lot. I’ve played well against him the last couple of times we played. It will be tough, but I think if I serve well and take care of my own I’m going to have looks at his service games.”

The match is second in the night session on Arthur Ashe after a 7:00pm start.

Go, Andy!

Gonzo Going Home, Roddick in Quarters

In the blink of an eye, serves soared, forehands flew, and Andy answered Fernando Gonzalez’s attempts to win with a dominating defense. Our American Firepower overthrew the Chilean in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, to reach his seventh US Open quarterfinals.

After being welcomed back to the jungle for Round4, Andy’s bpx and the “Rod Squad” fan club watched him break Gonzo’s first serve when he double faulted. Andy went on to serve steady and break the silver medalist again by simply stand his ground at net to lead 5-2. Twenty five minutes later, Andy held and took the set, 6-2.

The second set kicked off with Andy’s kick serve, but the Chilean was determined to fight back. Though he was whipping forehand cross-court, Andy found himself to three break points; one at 2-1, his second at 4-3, and his final on set point at 5-4. The 11th seed fought off two out of three, but the crowd was behind our Davis Cup champion all the way on set point. Andy proved why he is just that and nailed a cross-court backhand to prevail victorious after 35 minutes, 6-4.

Defeated and discouraged, Gonzalez stpped up to the baseline for one last chance to back in the match. Andy, however, has plans to send him packing and revealed it by breaking the 28-year-old’s opening service game of the third set. On Andy’s racquet at 3-1, Gonzalez saw his first and obly break point come and go in the blink of an eye as did his next service game. The Texas stepped up to the baseline leading 5-1 and torpeod his way to claim the “W” in impressive form, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.

Up next, Andy will take on last year’s finalist Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Stay tuned to AR.com for everything Andy in NYC. Go Andy!!

Can Andy Upset The Djoker?

For a place in the US Open semifinals, Andy is up against the Australian Open champion and World No. 3, Novak Djokovic – it’s going to be a tough one.

Djokovic, often nicknamed “The Djoker” for his famed impersonations, has toiled on his route through to his stage. He was extended to five sets by Tommy Robredo in a dramatic fourth round, and squeezed past Marin Cilic in four sets.

After such a demanding season he is also, unsurprisingly, suffering a few niggles. As the Serb confessed to the media: “If we start talking about things that are bothering me, as I said on the court, we’ll chat for a long time!”

The 21-year-old from Belgrade reached the final last year in a run that culminated with defeat to Roger Federer. He captured his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open title in January and added to that with ATP Masters Series shields at Indian Wells and Rome and an Olympic Games bronze medal. However, he has not won an ATP title since May.

Find out more about Djokovic in his ATP stats below:

Pronounced: DJO-ko-vich
Birthdate: 22-May-87
Birthplace: Belgrade, Serbia
Residence: Monte Carlo, Monaco
Height: 6’2’’ (187 cm)
Weight: 176 lbs (80 kg)
Plays: Right-handed
Turned Pro: 2003
Coach: Marian Vajda
Current ATP Ranking – Singles: 3
Career High ATP Ranking – Singles: 3 (9-Jul-07)
Current ATP Race – Singles: 2

Before he knew who he would be playing in the semifinals, Djokovic commented: “It’s going to be a tough match. Both of them very experienced, great players. Many years in top 10, both of them. Roddick, we all know, he’s former U.S. Open champion, couple times Grand Slam finalist, of course, and No. 1. So he has all the things, you know, under his belt that he needs to have. He’s playing in front of his crowd, on his favorite tournament. It’s always a difficult one to play against Roddick wherever, but especially here.”

Looking ahead to the clash, Andy said: “He’s the favorite, and it seems like every Grand Slam, he’s having these long, drawn‑out kind of battles, and he can’t go anymore and all these things. And I’m not really going to worry about all that. I’m just going to try to play my match.

“You’re going to have to go to work. He goes to work pretty much every point, and, my service game, he’s going to put returns in, he puts guys in pressure. It seems like a lot of times there’d be breaks back and forth with him. You know going in that you’re going to have to go to work.”

Andy has come across Djokovic twice before, with the spoils being shared. After losing their first match at Masters Series Canada last year, Andy gained his revenge in the Dubai semifinals earlier this season.

“I probably played more aggressively in Dubai than I did in Canada,” said Andy when comparing the two. “He kind of took it to me in the breakers in Canada, and might have been the other way around in Dubai. It’s going to be close, because, you know, I think it’s a pretty good matchup, and he returns pretty well. I serve pretty well. It will come down to momentum one way or the other, probably.”

Unsurprisingly, this is the match of the day and as such is the second to be played in the evening session, following an exhibition match starting at 7:00pm (EST).

Go, Andy!
